Nature Based Activities

for Vincy Kids

Welcome educators! This website is a nature-based activity resource guide for primary school science classes. These activities were inspired by conversations with primary school teachers of the North Leeward area and are in line with the most recent OECS learning standards. We hope that the activities make it easier for you to get your students engaged with the natural world of St. Vincent!

Keep scrolling to find the activities that pertain to the learning standards you seek!

If you were a plant, what plant would you be and why?

Students will research and present findings on a chosen plant species, guided by above the prompt. The project aims to foster understanding of plant life, diversity, uses, and adaptations across different grade levels. Final presentations will allow students to share what they have learned in a creative way that promotes the appreciation of plants as fellow living beings.

Skill: Observation

Duration: In-class; 10-30 minutes

Observation is not only one of the core skills to scientific inquiry, it is also an important quality in being aware and connected to one’s environment. Our brain is always getting input through each of our senses, whether we realize it or not. This is how humans, and all other living beings, learn to interact with their environment. However, we are often not actively aware of this, we are not actively observing.

In this activity, students will use each of their senses to practice intentional observation of their natural environment, not only teaching them a scientific skill but also encouraging the students to be more present in their environment.

Plants depend on leaves to transform sunlight, water, and air into food through photosynthesis, helping them grow and thrive, much like how food helps us do so!

In this activity, students will collect leaves, make observations and inferences about their characteristics, and create a booklet to document their findings.

Duration: In-class and at-home; 1-2 classes

Students will discover nature’s healing powers through exploration of their backyards and neighborhoods, specifically in search of medicinal plants. Considering how prominent the use of medicinal plants is in St. Vincent, it is useful for children to learn what different plants are growing around them that can be useful in times of illness. This activity is also good practice to get students better at identifying different plants, their parts, and their categories.
